How to Measure for Beams & Uprights

Picture
Pallet rack is the most popular method for storing palletized box loads inside the warehouse.  Knowing what you need isn't always easy.  Follow these easy steps to determine your pallet rack needs:

1. Pallet Size. Measure the size of your pallet fully loaded. (Example: 40"W x 48"D x 46"H)

2. Determine the Beam Width of the pallet load allowing at least 4" between frame upright. (Example: Two 42"W loads will be 4 + 42+ 4+ 42 + 4 = 96" wide beam)

3. Multiply the weight of the pallet and load by the number of pallets per level for Beam Capacity. (Example: 2 Pallets at 2500 lbs. x 2 pallets per level = 5000 lb beam capacity minimum.)

4. Upright Depth should be your pallet depth (4") minus 6" (3" overhang front/back). (Example: 48" - 6" = 42" deep upright frame.)

5. For Upright Height add add at least 6" clearance top/bottom.  Add the beam height and multiply total by the amount of upper levels needed (not counting the floor). (Example: 4 levels = 48"H + 6" clearance + 5" beam height = 59".  Three upper levels x 59 = 177" Upright Height required.)

6. Next, choose from wood or wire decks, pallet supports, spacers and frame protectors.
